Building a façade to fit in conservation area

Trent Concrete has started the fabrication of a facade cladding for a seven-storey Grosvenor Developments Ltd office development at 77 Grosvenor Street in London.

Trent's £613,000 contract covers 1250m2 of brick-faced cladding incorporating a natural Portland stone feature band. The bricks, Coleford Buff, were specified to complement surrounding buildings and satisfy the requirements of Westminster City Council for a high quality hand-made brick in the Mayfair conservation area. The units are typically 3.7m high and 6m long, and include a combination of plain wall panels and single, double and triple punched window panels.

Engineer Whitby Bird sought Trent's early input on the technical feasibility of a precast alternative to the in situ brickwork facade originally specified.

The precast solution was sought to add value to the project by generating additional floor space at the perimeter and maintain the pace of construction to achieve a watertight envelope as early as possible.
